UN – ROMANIA MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING ON TRAINING FOR
THE UN SECURITY PERSONNEL SIGNED AT NEW YORK
• the training in Romania of the UN security personnel will start in October, at the Center of Excellence of the Protection and Guard Service
New York, August 5 /Permanent Mission/ - Secretary of State, Director of the Protection and Guard Service, Lieutenant General Lucian Pahonțu PhD, has signed today together with Warren Sach, ASG for U.N. General Services, the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Romania and the United Nations on the training of the UN security personnel at the Center of Excellence of the Protection and Guard Service in Romania.
The Protection and Guard Service, through the performance of its personnel in the theatres of operations, has proved professionalism as far as training is concerned and commitment to carry out the security missions for the UN high officials at the highest standards. These achievements made the UN request Romania to increase the number of teams in the field.
The training system used for the personnel of the Protection and Guard Service has been inspiring for DSS, generating ideas and leading to the proposal extended to Romania to establish a Center of Excellence within the Protection and Guard Service, whose activity should also benefit the UN personnel who train in order to provide security for the UN high officials.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding is a confirmation of the way in which Romania has honored, as of 2004, its commitments of external representation in support of the UN missions, as well as a proof of the Romanian competence in the field of providing personnel that is specialized in protection and security for dignitaries.
The role of the Center of Excellence within the Protection and Guard Service is to train the personnel who provide security for high officials at UN standards.
The Government of Romania will certify the Memorandum through a Government Decision during one of the next meetings of the Executive.
The training of the UN security personnel is due to start in October 2009, at the Center of Excellence of the Protection and Guard Service.
